July : US, Britain, USSR and 58 nations sign Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty. Pope Paul VI publishes encyclical on the regulation of birth, reaffirms stand against artificial birth control.  Palestinian Liberation Organization's first hijacking of an El Al plane

August : U.S. Republicans nominate Richard Nixon to be their presidential candidate. Democratis nominate Hubert Humphrey. The Soviet Union invades Czechoslovakia with over 200,000 Warsaw Pact troops. The Beatles launch the Apple Records label with ‘Hey Jude’.  France explodes its first hydrogen bomb, thus becoming the world's fifth nuclear power.


September : First Boeing 747 jet airliner rolls out. 21 killed by hijackers aboard a Pan Am jet in Karachi, Pakistan, Arthur Ashes wins first Open U.S. Tennis championship. Hawaii Five-O debuts on CBS. 6,000 die in earthquake in northeast Iran
