Playgrounds : Those That Weren’t

In this section, we look at some of the sites that appeared likely to host Olympics events in and around Melbourne, but for one reason or another, missed out in 1956.

Foremost of these were, of course, the Showgrounds in Ascot Vale and Princes Park in Carlton, both grand schemes, but ultimately beyond the ability of the city and state to find the funds for in a time of acute housing shortages amplified by a heavy influx of European immigration.


Due to Australian Quarantine restrictions, the Equestrian events were held in Stockholm, Sweden in June at the Stockholm Olympic Stadium, originally designed and built  as a venue for the 1912 Olympic Games.
