July : PM John Gorton officially opens Tullamarine Airport to international and domestic flights.  Metric Conversion Board established.  Hans Tholstrup completes circumnavigation of Australia in a 5.2 metre runabout.  PM Gorton confronted by 10,000 tribesmen demanding end to colonial rule in Papua New Guinea . Sprinter Raelene Boyle wins gold in 100m, 200m and relay at Edinburgh Games.  “Australia All Over” (originally Äll Ways On Sunday” heard on ABC Radio for the first time.  John Newcombe and Margaret Court win Wimbledon men’s and women’s singles.   

August : Ansett and TAA announce 6% fare increase, economy class Melbourne-Sydney $24.90.  Work stops on West Gate Bridge for steel strengthening. New Mazda 1300 sedan released, $2,190 inc. Tax. The Federal Government refuses to recognise Aborigibal land claims at Wave Hill in the Northern Territory.

September : Margaret Court becomes the second player to win women’s tennis’s Grand Slam after her Victory in the U.. Open.  Victorian ALP Executive dismissed by Federal body after years of tension. Australia’s Gretel II disqualified after beating US boat Intrepid in second race of America’s Cup and lose series 1-4.  Carlton defeat Collingwood by 10 points after trailing by 44 points at half-time before record 121,696 crowd. South Sydney defeat Manly-Warringah in Rugby League final.
