New Zealand team enters the arena, new Olympic Stand in background H.R.H. The Duke of Edinburgh salutes the English team entering the arena.

Athletes from various countries make their way to buses at the Olympic Village in Heidelberg on their way to the Opening Ceremony, and (right) on return. . On Opening Day, some 90 police ensured that a convoy of 167 buses moved without obstruction from the Heidelberg Village to the stadium. An average of 79 buses per day transported competitors to and from the Village.
